Vapor Barrier Packaging
KEEPING ITEMS SAFE AND DRY
Protective Vapor Barrier Packaging in New Orleans
If exposed to salt water and salt water vapor during ocean transport, electronics and items with sensitive or bare metal surfaces are at risk of corrosion. This can potentially harm the product’s functionality.
We place items such as these in a vapor barrier bag with an activated desiccant inside. Then we heat-seal the seams and a vacuum is used to reduce the air volume inside the bag before the final seal. This decreases the humidity level inside the barrier bag, helping to prevent corrosion.
Government Shipments and Humidity Control
For many government shipments, the barrier material is MIL-PRF-131. The desiccant is activated clay conforming to MIL-D-3464. We prepare shipments to the specifications provided and can place a humidity indicator card inside the barrier bag so that the condition of the item and the desiccant can be checked upon opening. We can also provide humidity indicator plugs that project through the barrier material. This allows for checking the humidity inside the barrier bag without opening it.
Advanced Packaging Materials
We carefully select the materials used for each shipment based on the asset’s requirements. This may include:
- Corrugated cardboard
- Hard shell cases
- Specialized cushioning
- Anti-static materials
- Vapor barrier (Note: The use of moisture vapor barriers and desiccant are currently denoted in MIL-STD-2073 under Method of Preservation by the codes 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, and 55.)
- Heat shrink wrapping
